stop eating fried foods, fatty creams, butter, cheese and start taking Omega 3's-fish oils 3x a day 5 minutes before a meal. Taking garlic pills everyday also helps. There is an excellent product called Bios life from a company Unicity that specializes in this. It is all-natural, you mix it in water or juice 15 minutes before a meal twice a day and it is guranteed to lower cholesterol. DO NOT take statin drugs. The side effects are way too dangerous for something that can be solved naturally. Bios Life actually lowers cholestrol 4 x more than a Stain drug and elevates your good cholesterol( HDL.) Statin drugs cannot do that.
Also- anything with Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated in the ingredients should be thrown out immediately. This is a serious danger to your health. Do Not buy margarine. Cook with Olive and coconut oils.

Looks like you're getting alot of good advice! Make sure all of your foods are low fat, in other words, no fried foods, and try to not eat at fast food places, they're leaded! Subway is a good alternative, in frozen dinners, many are out there now, weight watchers, healthy choice, etc.
If you can start some kind of exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes, this will drop your cholesterol level very fast. Walking, dancing, kickboxing, tae bo, swimming, anything that will get your heart rate up for at least 20 minutes will do it. Do this every day and give yourself one day off a week. I've seen people come off of all kinds of meds because of exercise.

If a doctor told you your cholesterol was high, certainly he gave you suggestions to lower it. You can eat a low fat diet. Go online for low cholesterol diets and also you can take meds if it's that high. If your doctor did not give you advice, I would change doctors!
