My sister smokes and I've been trying to get her to quit for a long time. Everytime I bring it up she either ignores me, changes the subject, or gets mad at me. I know that she's old enough to make her own decisions, but I want her to stay healthy and live to be over 90. I did a report on nicotine for my science class and I know that it's very addictive. I'm the only one in my family who's concerned about her. When I see her, her breath smells like she smoked recently. I don't know how to get her to quit.

sorry but there is not much you can do . When someone has an addiction to something like cigarettes the addiction is so strong that they can only quit if it is their own decision . I smoked for 38 years and finally did quit 6months ago . All along everyone who loved me tried to convince me to quit . The chemicals in cigarettes today are so much addictive than when I started , it's
crazy . Every now and then remind her that you love her and hope she quits her stinky habit .
P.S. Even after all of those years smoking , my lungs are clear { my DR. is amazed } and my health is fine , so don't make yourself sick worrying about her .

I am in the same boat you are. My husband just recently started smoking again and it is driving me crazy! Gets some stats for her - you know like how many people die a year from lung cancer or second hand smoke. If she has children, explain to her that she has a responsibility to be a good role model to them and smoking isnt it. Also, get some images off the web of a lung that is "black" and filled with holes! Maybe, just maybe, it will get to her. Good luck!

I say just break down and start to cry, because it seems to me that you really love your sister and don't want anything to happen to her. Tell her how you feel and the tears wont be far behind, if she really loves you she'll listen and take heed to what you're saying, but don't nag it might just make things worse. Good luck.
