um, there is no hell, it was made up to scare people into churches and fill the collection plates! God did not create any such place, it looks creepy in the movies, and only exists in them, too!

The people that lived before Jesus (and I think those living contemporaneously with Christ and immediately after who did not have time to hear the Gospel) are judged under the old covenant or by their knowledge of God.
The Bible says that Abraham believed in God, and God credited to him as righteousness. I believe that the atonement of Christ was retroactively applied to the OT saints.

However, the Bible says that there is enough evidence of God in creation for people to recognize His existence and the existence of a moral law. Therefore, people should obey the law, and when they fall short repent before God.
Faithful people of other religions poses a difficult question. However, the Bible is clear that Christ is the only way to God. (Acts 4:12, John 14:6) Therefore those without Christ are at risk.

I cannot judge another person. God will do that. I cannot see into a person's heart, so I cannot definitively say who will and will not be saved.

I believe that God will be the judge of that. There is a hint in the Bible that some will be there that never knew of Jesus.

Let me find it....Romans 2: 11. For there is no respect of persons with God.
12. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13. (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15. Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
16. In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

God wrote the book. God will be the judge in the end.

Jesus created christianity. so before Jesus came down, all christians were jews.. therfore, those who died before Christ will still have the chance to go to heaven.

As for muslims.. i can't say they will, but i can't say they won't. muslims believe in another prophet, mohammed, and even tho you guys recognize jesus, you reject him as the messiah. i think it's up to you and God to decide that. How important is Jesus in your life? do you use his words from the new testiment? think about that.

No one will go to hell because they haven’t heard of Jesus Christ. The heathen will go to hell for murder, rape, adultery, lust, theft, lying, etc. Sin is not failing to hear the gospel. Rather, "sin is the transgression of the Law" (1 John 3:4). If we really care about the lost, we will become missionaries and take the good news of God’s forgiveness in Christ to them. See John 16:9 footnote.

All who come to God in The Way He proscribes will receive His free gift of Salvation and enter Heaven.
Regardles of Race or Nationality

Those who followed God's proscribed way before Christ' s Final Sacrifice waited in Paradise untill Jesus Came and took them to Heaven before he returned and spent the final 40 days with His people after His Resurection.

I don't claim to know who will or will not be in hell.
You say 'what about those who died before Jesus Christ'?
I'm more inclined to say 'what about those who were born after Jesus died? At least the people already dead had already committed all their sins when He atoned for them. All of you and my sins were not yet committed. How can the punishment precede the crime and be considered 'enough'.?

(I'm playing devil's advocate, in case you're wondering.) ;o)

Depends on how they followed the Law. Since the Law was the covanent between God and humanity at the time.

As for an explaination: Christ said "I am the way the truth and the life, no one goes to the father but through me"

"They shall be judged by their deeds."

With the critical caveat that in another place in the Bible it proclaims that even the best human deeds pale to nothing in God's eyes. So they're screwed too.

Simply put, God doesn't care about quality, or even quantity in his followers. Just obsessive obedience. Exactly what one would expect of a god with his roots in a totem of war.
