I had a beautiful tortie for 17 years....she was like a sibling to me. She was also incredibly tempermental and downright grumpy sometimes, but at the same time she made it clear she loved us and always trusted us. She was a little smaller than most cats as well. I loved the fact her personality was stronger than most peoples...if you did something wrong (like not feeding her on time) whoo man she let you know it!!

unfortionatly we just had to put our tortie down earlier this year.she was a great cat a bit obnoxious on wanting attention.what she started doing was compleately unacceptable.she started attacking my son,i dont mean in a playful way either. it started as maybe 1 to 2 times a month when he got near ,to her hiding waiting for him several times a day while she lunged at him . I mean nasty little thing had her ears laid back, her fur was standing up, teeth and claws bared.
so one day my wife called me to tell me she already attacked him 5 times by noon.i said ok we got to get rid of her.well about an hour later she called again saying she attacked him and actually got ahold of him. so i left work went home loaded her in the carrier and made calls to every shelter i could think of to no avail. so i went to the vet they called several adoption agencies(they dont put the animals to sleep) but none could take her they were all full ,the cat was too old,or the fact she attacked small children. so the only choices i had left was throw her out on the streets or euthinize her,i chose the latter, being the most humane.
it tore my wife, myself and even my son up for a little while, but being 3 he over came it quick.every now and then he will ask if she is in heaven still.
i would defenatly not reccomend torties for small children.

I don't have an answer. I don't know what to do! My Tortie is so sweet and lovable one minute and the next, she attacks me! I mean Really!I have shed blood and have scars....I love her, but she is a wild cat at times. A lot of the time. I know she loves me, so "what to do?" I love her very much, but sometimes I want to give her up.

Sadly most of the cats that we put down at the shelter where torties, they can be a bit nasty! They are beautiful cats but very moody!!! If the cat cannot be safely handled it is not adoptible.

Tortis shell cats are usually, though not always, female. Temperament varies.

aka "three colored cats" usually, black, yellow and white, but also known as gray, yellow and white. Torties are almost always female. If you have a tortie male, they are sterile, and quite valueble. Tortie cats are fierce, protective, mothers, very effective hunters, and can be very affectionate to humans when she allows it

Isabella,
Tortie cats are gentle and very loving. They are also very colorful, similar to calico.

Sorry I accidentally rated that as a bad question!
They are known for their "tortitude". That's attitude with a big hiss. I have two of them in my menagerie. Love 'em both.
