You can't recycle it in my town since they tend to have greasy cheese and oil stains on their cardboard.

In case you have a clean box without that they tell you to turn the box inside out so that the garbage collectors will see it as clean cardboard and not as a pizza box [as if those guys are taking a magnifying glass to every piece of trash they come across - no matter what the town recycling manager thinks]

Because they are contaminated with grease.
Only clean cardboard is recyclable.
