My dog is approx. nine months and I noticed a "fishy" smell orginating from her vaginal area. She gets regular baths and is up to date on her shots, I was wondering if this was an indication that she may be about to start her doggie "period". This smell didn't start until about a month ago

my dog has been in heat now 3 times... I have never ever smelled anything associating with her heat cycle... you might be smelling the substance from her anal glands (that smell is GROSS)...

Normal signs of heat are the swelling of the vulva, followed by a slight mucky discharge before the full on bleeding.
I have never noticed a smell before.

Her behaviour may also change a bit, she can go off her food slightly, and display flirtatious movements, darting about side to side with her rear end etc.

She probably is. Look and see if her boo-boo is swollen and she will also be licking herself a lot. Good luck. Invest in the doggie diapers.
