There are various terms that can be used when describing a reduction in the amount of micro-organisms.

Disinfection, pasteurisation, filtration can all be used to reduce the number of micro organism present.

Pasteurisation and filtration is normally used on liquid substances. Milk, water, wine and fruit juices.

Disinfectants are chemical antimicrobial agents that can be used on inanimate objects such as utensils, worktops, surgical tools or living tissue. When used on utensils they are called germicides. When used on tissues they are called antiseptics.
