that you don't need religion in order to be a good person and lead an honest life? I'm an atheist and I live a very fulfilling life. I'm a good, caring person and I strive to do positive things with my life. I want to do good and help better this place we live in just because I can and I'm able to, not because it is required by some religion. Yet I have this friend who is honestly baffled by this. I try to explain it to the poor guy, but he just doesn't get it. He sure is cute though. Lol.

I mean it's fine being religious if it helps you get through with life. You can be religious (or nonreligious) just as long as your not hurting or offending others purposely.

It's because they don't want to understand. They don't want to think about life without their god. These people think that religion and values are the same thing. For the record, they are not. It's entirely possible to live a good life as an atheist, and good for you.
Don't put up with the bull people want to force on you. You have a right to live as you wish to, whilst abiding by the law of course. Think for yourself and you'll find the path that you're supposed to follow.

Why? if you believe that the purpose of life is to produce offspring then why help others? If there is no greater purpose then why should the human race keep thriving? If we all are just going to die into nothingness then why save people from starvation just to suffer the rest of their life?
This is why it is hard for reigious people to understand why athiest do good works. If the atheists believes that when you die then thats it then what is the point of living. Why make the world a better place if there is no point in living in the first place? christians can answer the above questions. can you?

As a Christian, I know that it is possible to be a good person and live an honest life. But, even though you are a good person, you still make mistakes. Everybody sins, even a good person. Have you ever told a white lie? That makes you a liar. Have you ever mocked someone when they didn't deserve it? That makes you judgmental. Have you ever taken a pen or a paperclip from work? That makes you a thief. Have you ever lost your temper and yelled at a loved one or stanger? That means you are impatient. Have you ever looked at a married woman or man with lust? THat makes you an adulterer. Doing these things doesn't mean that you are a "bad" person; it means you are a sinner. Everyone is a sinner. Sin is sin in the eyes of God, and all sinners need Jesus to atone for their sins. When you repent and accept Jesus as your Lord, then God forgives you for your sins. By having your sins forgiven, then you will one day be able to face God in the day of judgment and know that you are safe.

Religion does more than just leading to a positive behavior and fulfilling life.
Most religions assume that there is something much more powerful than human exist. The existence of such thing--God, does NOT depend on whether we believe it or not.
If your friend believes in one God, it would certainly be wise for him to follow God's word.
We cannot prove or disprove the existence of God by science or logic, because we simply do not have the ability to access all the required data and evidence. On the other hand, I don't mean that we just blindly believe in something without any logical thinking. For example, if religion XYZ asks us to believe in a God XYZ, but religion XYZ doesn't explain what God XYZ means, then nobody can truly believe in religion XYZ.
Try to understand what your friend's God is about, and make your decision to whether you believe it.

Why can't athiests understand that people who follow religion aren't doing it because they think they need to in order to lead an honest life? Has it ever occured to you that maybe people actually believe in something that is greater then what they see around them? Maybe they follow it because they think there is more to life then what they see on TV? Why are you, as an athiest, so against leaving people alone? If a thiest wants to believe in a higher power then let them! You get angery when someone tries to convert you but you have no problem trying to smash someone elses beliefs!!!

I understand that. It's ***-backwards to believe something because of that belief's alleged beneficial effects on your conduct. We should believe what we believe because we really think it's true based on the available evidence. That's why I'm a theist (albeit a pretty unorthodox one).

You are a good person, as am I and the vast majority of nonbelievers. We are that because we answer only to ourselves, not to someone whom we believe does not exist.
It's a lot easier to do the right thing when you have to live with yourself.

It will never work out.
Statistically, girls will not remain with guys dumber than they are. And, it's obvious you are a lot smarter than he is.
Move on and find someone your intellectual equivalent, you'll both be happier.

It is not about being a GOOD PERSON. (good according to whose standards?)
It is about re-establishing a relationship with God that was broken.
It is about entering into the service of the King of this world.
It is about going to heaven, the Kingdom of the King.
It is about obeying the King.
I can understand you, but this is not about you, but about what God wants for you..
