If so do you restrict some channels/tv shows? When they were younger like toddler did you let them watch the Noggin station? Does any educational tv make them dumber or smarter?

My kids are not allowed to watch TV Monday through Thursday. They can watch Friday evening until Sunday evening. It all must be age appropriate.
When my oldest was younger, the TV was a built in babysitter. I have since seen the error of my ways and strictly limit the amount of TV that they are allowed to watch. The only exception to the rule of watching during the week is if they have to watch something like the presidential debate or something like that for a class assignment.
The same rules apply for the computer or video games. The computer may be used to do research for an assignment though.
I don't neccessarily think that even educational TV makes them any smarter than their counterparts that don't watch TV or don't watch educational TV. If a child has a desire to learn they will learn. My kids love learning about animals and spend a lot of time learning about them through books and asking questions. The don't have to watch animal planet to get the information, it can be found in a million other ways.

NO MORE THAN 2 HOURS A WEEK. To make sure they don't watch more keep the TV in a locked cabinet. The best thing would be not to have a TV since children will always see advertisements for other TV shows during commercials. And their friends will always tell them about other TV shows they should watch.

Mine watches Noggin and Nick Jr and educational videos from the library. These are all he is allowed to watch. My son has learned a lot from these shows. He has learned some spanish, he knows the alphabet, he can count to 20, he knows most colors and shapes.

I have three kids. I let them each pick one video a day. So they usually end up watching 3 videos a day, like half hour Barney's or occasionally a longer movie like Land Before Time. I hardly ever let them watch real TV. Maybe PBS kids once in a while. But I don't want them exposed to commercials.

I am in rural Canada without cable or satellite, just rabbit ears. We get 3 channels, kids shows are only on till noon with no commercials. Since we are out 4 mornings a week, they do not get much TV. We do watch movies on rainy afternoons. A little TV can't hurt, just make sure you monitor what they are watching.

Yes i let her watch nickjr, disney channel and pbs. Not every day though. She's into barney so on the weekdays she watches it. She's not really into tv so there are only certain cartoons she'll watch. She is a smart baby so i dont see the problem with letting her watch educational programming.

i keep my tv in the basement so it's less likely to be turned on after school, or to be turned on just out of habit.
when the kids do venture down there to watch some tv, i defiantly make sure i know what they are watching, and restrict the time they spend sitting there. although they do spend more time there in the winter cuz it's too cold outside to play, they rarely watch more then 30-60 minutes.

in moderation, educational tv can help a kid learn

When he was a newborn I didn't let him watch TV. I didn't/don't believe at that age it can be educational. Now that my son is 17 months old, he's really not interested even though I would let him watch certain programs or dvd's if he wanted.

yes..my kid watches noggin. It doesn't make her smarter. It may teach her something differently then I would, though. It shows I'm a smart mommy by helping her make better entertainment choices.

Noggen is a great channel, very educational.

As for the amount, it is almost always on in our house, but the kids are never in the room, lol. However the second I turn it off they are in there griping, lol. I will never understand that one.
