Labs are good with children, but you need to remember that though they are smart when they are older, they don't have a brain in their head until they are about 2 years old (have a 6 month old), are very rambunctious, and playful. Believe it or not, Dobermans are excellent around children.

For smaller breed of dog, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is exceptionally good around kids, they still like to play, etc. but are at most 18 pounds, they are hardy little dogs with THE most loving personality. Very good companion dogs.

My male german shepherds have always loved children, my females do too, but they are not quite as gentle as the boys. There are two little boys that live down the road and they come over because I have a rope swing in the back and they like to swing on it. All the dogs crowd around the children to play, but two of my males follow them home when they leave and once the boys are home they come back. These same two dogs also love my niece and her new baby sister, I sometimes have to drag them home. For the record my dogs were not raised around small children, our daughters are 20 and 25, but they are still very good with children.

The above answerer suggested "Scnoodles" though this mix may well be good with children (which I kind of doubt because Schnauzers aren't always the best with kids), I ask you not to support people carelessly breeding these dogs.

Anyway, Golden Retrievers are great. Many sporting group dogs are great, however Cocker Spaniels (at least in my expirence) can be rather shy.

Poodles are also great with kids. Most don't mind being pulled on so much as other dogs, and being a smart breed they know when to step away, however they can be hard to groom.

Definitely ones to go for are Golden Retrievers and Labradors. They are absolutely perfect with small children and are very obedient. If these dogs are too big you should try a cocker spaniel or even a Daschund.

Dogs that aren't usually good with small children are Fox Terriers, Jack Russels, Staffys and from personal experience Chihuahuas. These little guys bite hard and fast. And, these dogs have too much energy, much too much.

No dog treats kids with more love than golden retrievers who are simple to train and will protect kids as they are known to.

a lot of toy dogs can be very active, and could snap at children because the children are too careless with small dogs. they pick them up and hold them by the head or sometimes pull the tails or coat and the dog will snap.
Lhasa Apso, maltese, shitzu, pomerians, toy poodles can be very stubburn and need a lot of attention and are very smart..

then there are mid to large dogs. beagles will be good with small kids and have patience. the only drawback to them is that they need a lot of exercise. personally I have a German Shepherd. I have had, Buddy, ever since my daughter was 2 months old. he protects her like it's his kid. anyway, I choose a German Shepherd as a family companion and guardian. he has never snaped at my daughter or any member of the family. but training is essential, and a lot of attention. I'd recommend a big home or a home with a big yard for large dogs. but I know people who have large dogs and live in apartments who do fine. they properly exercise the dogs.

some on here have mentioned Golden Retrievers. Very loyal, gentle, smart dogs to have too.
basset hounds are gentle too. not active, and will not harm kids, accidentally, like others dogs will when it wants to run or play.

and please don't adopt a dog just so you're going to keep it in a cage. I just don't understand people who adopt a dog as a family present only to keep it in a cage.

We recently adopted a cocker spaniel and she is awesome with kids(my daughter is 5) and not normally a barker. We keep her in the house. She is very well house trained and loving and loves tug of war and fetch.
I guess it really depends on whether this will be an indoor dog or an outdoor dog. we checked out the humane society and fell in love the first visit. You could contact the local humane society and ask what dogs they have available and what breed may be best for families. They really are very informative and helpful.

Beagles, basset's,Jack Russel(speaking from experience, have one),shepherds, anything a little older than a puppy that is used to children. Older dogs don't have the exuberance a puppy has!

Yellow Labradors!!! I have two of them and two children under 2 years of age. They get along famously. The kids learn to take a licking very early in this house.

I would say mutts. Mutts are usually more intellegent, loyal and loving than many pure breds who tend to have been overbred. Go to your local animal shelter and ask an employee about what dog will best suit your needs. Workers at shelters get to know each dogs specific "personality".
