After 27 years of depression I can tell you that there is no cure for it natural or otherwise. However, you can do things that will alleviate the symptoms and make the condition managable. Some people swear by St John's Wort, but this is mainly for short term mild to moderate depression and there are some contra-indications. You should read up a but about it before trying it, in case it is not appropriate for you.

I agree with other answers that exercise is very helpful and getting out for a brisk walk every day if you can is an easy thing to do. Work with your doctor towards finding a therapy that is right for you, this may be medication, it may be cognitive behavioural therapy, it may be counselling or a combo of all of these things.

Recognise depression when it is in its early stages and get to the doc before you feel debilitated and desperate. After a while you will understand the signs and symptoms as a depressive phase approaches. That is when to tackle it, don't wait till you feel so dreadful that you can barely motivate yourself to get out of bed. Hit it with anti-depressants and whatever other therapies you have found effective straight away, and thus minimize the effects it has on your life.

Lastly, don't listen to anyone who tells you it is not a real condition and that you should snap out of it etc etc, they are insensitive fools who have no empathic skills. And if you can, try doing this every day - one physical thing (exercise) one intellectual thing (read a text book, do a crossword puzzle) and one spiritual thing (read or write a poem, listen to music) to remind yourself that life can be beautiful.

I personally have not found a natural cure for depression but some people say that St. Johns Wort, works really well. It is an alternative to precription medication and is supposed to work well. You may want to give it a try.

Exercise is a proven help to depression and is now being recommended by doctors to their patients. The naturally produced endorphins are quickly released when one exercises. More oxygen to the brain more release of feel good endorphins. St Johns Wort is also a remedy but personally i hate taking pills so try moving and do some gentle cardio vascular exercise like walking or swimming or cycling. Laughter is another good natural remedy..

This answer is from my own experience being that I was diagnosed as having "Bipolar Depression". I have gone through many counselors, therapist, doctors and none of them could help me not even their medications could help. So I decided to do some research on my own through spirituality and philosophy. I started with astrology.... now wait a minute before you shut me down about this subject (astrology) just listen to what I have to say please it will be worth it trust me. Astrology can tell you everything there is to know about yourself, why you do the things you do, your mentality, your health, what you are here for and even why you look the way you look etc....... It's not all about your horoscope like everyone thinks, it's much much more than that. Anyways it has helped me so much more than any doctors, psychiatrist, or therapist that I have seen and it can help you to if you have the desire to make changes in your life but you need to want to make changes, there is no majic cure that so many people are looking for. Astrology will give you all the tools you will need to make any changes in your life that you want to make and it is not evil or forbidden like a lot of christians think, I know cause my belief is christianity. I know of some good websites to get you started if you'd like to start your health process and when I can, I can help you to understand what it is you need help with although these sites are very self explanitory. I have been studying astrology now for about 2yrs and I still have a lot to learn so I will try to help you as much as I can from what I do know about astrology. I am VERY sincere in getting people to help themselves and live better lives. I am no doctor, psychatrist, therapist or any other health professional just a person who has been hurting much to long and wants to get well and help others do the same.

Sincerly,

In God's Love

Mary

A lot of people say stuff like herbs, and exercise, and group therapy. But I've found only two things that always worked in the last 12 years (and I'm only 20!), these are: keeping busy (have something to work towards) and talking about it (to sympathetic friends)

Recently used this recipe: Riding a bike, eating brown rice mixed with any assortment of vegetables. Walking to complete some errands. Also, carousing a bookstore, actually buying one. A weekly sit in the local coffee shop for a latte and a newspaper.

exercise will release endorphins and they are very good for depression.. We have a devise called a SCIO that works with biofeedback.. it teaches or rather reteaches the body to deeply relax and that rectifies all kinds of problems. You'd be surprised what all can be done with one of these devises.

Try smiling for about 15 mins a day! I have suffered with manic depression for years, but the more I try to smile, the less it affects me on a day to day basis!
