I am a chef of 15 yrs exp. There is no way of knowing what number to put your stove on. They all vary. get yourself what is generally called a candy themometer. Put stove top on about med. high. Wait till desired temp. is reached.
Be careful no to overload oil or it will spill over and this could be bad

I'm assuming you have dough at this point. If not, use a yeast dough recipe. I make my dough in the bread machine:
3 tsp. yeast
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsps. salt
2 Tbsp. sugar
3 Tbsp. oil or melted butter
3/4 cup warmed milk
1 cup warm water
Use dough setting on bread machine.
Roll out dough on floured surface about 3/4 inch thick and cut using doughnut cutter or big glass to cut the outside, and something small to cut a hole in the middle. If you don't have a hole, the middle will be doughy.
Make sure you have a big, deep skillet--so you can put a couple inches of oil in it and still have plenty of depth remaining. Use a metal spatula or metal tongs--nothing plastic. Turn heat on medium-high, try 7 on your stove. Don't put doughnuts into oil until it's hot. Oil will be ready when you drop a small bit of doughnut dough in the oil and it fries and sizzles instead of just sinking to the bottom. Place doughnuts carefully in oil, being careful not to splash anything. When the bottom is golden, turn it over and fry the other side. Doughnuts only take a few minutes to make. Remove from oil and place on a paper-towel lined plate to cool. Sprinkle with powdered (confectioners) sugar. If the oil starts to pop, turn down the heat a bit. You must pay close attention to this project and don't let kids around when you do it, just to be safe. It's not dangerous if you're careful and know what you're doing. Do NOT walk away from this project and keep an eye on it at all times. If in doubt, turn off the heat, put a lid on the skillet and move to a cold burner on the stove to cool off.

I would not attempt to deep fry donuts on a stove top unless I had a good fire extinguisher or was extremely sure of what I was doing. Deep frying on a stove top, if you spill the grease, could start a grease fire. I have however seen people use woks for deep frying- check the manufacturers label. I would deeply recommend for you to buy an inexpensive deep fryer with a temp. adjustment . most of the models are highly portable, small and even store the left over grease.

why don't you go to walmart and get a instead read thermometer. They are great to have on hand. Also you can make some really easy doughnuts by just using canned biscuits. Roll out enough to cut the center out. Fry in oil and drop in cinnamon/sugar mixture or make a glaze with confectioner sugar, vanilla and or maple flavoring and a little milk. Dip doughnuts in mixture. These are easy and kid friendly too. They love to help.

because most stoves vary in temp, get a thermometer. That way you can place on the pot itself and it will give you the right temperature. By the way, if you want a simple recipe, get the pillsbury dough, roll it, cut out small circles and fry them. You can them sprinkle some sugar on them and voila! Instant donuts and very inexpensive. My kids loved them! Make sure you keep an eye on the oil. It can burn fast and it's very dangerous.

This is very dangerous to do stove top.
I would recommend a fry daddy or other home fryer.
If you do it stove top use a food-grade thermometer that has a range to cover your desired temps. It would probably be like medium high heat on your stove top.

Baked Doughnuts
Recipe By : The Fannie Farmer Cookbook
Serving Size : 24 Preparation Time :0:15
Categories : Breakfast
Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ ------------------------------...
2 tbsps yeast
1/3 c water -- warmed
1 1/2 c skim milk -- at room temperature
1/3 c oil -- at room temperature
1/4 c granulated sugar
2 tsps salt
2 tsps nutmeg
2 egg whites -- whipped
4 1/2 c unbleached flour
1/2 c egg white
1 c sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Preheat oven at 450 after first and second rise. To proof yeast, mix 1/4 cup
warm (115) water with 1/2 teaspoon honey; stir and set aside until foamy. In
mixing bowl, combine proofed yeast, milk, oil, 1/4 cup sugar, nutmeg, egg
whites, and 2 cups flour. Beat briskly until well blended. Add remaining 2 1/2
cups flour and beat until smooth. Cover the bowl and let double in size, about
1 hour. Dust a board generously with flour and turn the dough mass onto it.
This dough is soft and needs enough flour on the board to prevent sticking, but
is easy to handle. Pat the dough into a round about 1/2" thick. Use a
3" doughnut cutter and cut out the doughnuts, placing them (and the
doughnut holes) on prepared baking pans, 1" apart. These don't spread
much; they rise. Let the doughnuts rest and rise 20 minutes, uncovered. Bake
about 10 minutes, or a little longer, until they have a touch of golden brown.
Remove from the oven. On a sheet of wax paper spread cinnamon sugar. !
Brush
each doughnut and doughnut hole with egg white and roll in the cinnamon sugar.
