Because the world is NOT and should NOT be governed through religious teachings. There is a freedom of religion. That means we don't have to follow any religion. So, if the Bible tells you you have to stone people, own slaves or have multiple wives, the bible is illegal. The Civil and Penal Codes, and the Constitution are above any religious book.

I suppose you are serious about this question. Jesus himself said, Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. ( the stoning stopped). That to me, said it all.
People do still stone people, and have multiple wives, etc. Because the word of God is not read or believed by everyone yet, these things will continue to happen, I am curious why you are asking this question. Hope I helped. I know I will not get voted best answer, but can't help but defend the Bible. There were a lot of barbaric practices going on then, and now. Look at Henry VIII. Wow. What a character. History is history. The word of God is unchangeable, because He is I AM.

The Old Testament was written for a barbaric age.
"As regards the Word particularly, it has existed in every age, though not the Word we possess at the present day. Another Word existed in the Most Ancient Church before the Flood, and yet another Word in the Ancient Church after the Flood. Then came the Word written through Moses and the Prophets in the Jewish Church, and finally the Word written through the Evangelists in the new Church. The reason why the Word has existed in every age is that by means of the Word there is a communication between heaven and earth, and also that the Word deals with goodness and truth, by which a person is enabled to live in eternal happiness. In the internal sense therefore the Lord alone is the subject, for all goodness and truth are derived from Him" (Arcana Coelestia n. 2895).

The acts you have quoted were written down in the old testament. During his ministry jesus said that he was creating a new covenant between man and god therefore superseding the old testament. Remember the old testament says an eye for an eye but jesus taught us to turn the other cheek. The new testament containing the teachings of jesus basically overwrites what is contained in the old testament and that is why stoning, slavery and having multiple wives is considered wrong now. Of course if you don't believe that jesus had the authority to speak for god, then you will have to come to your own conclusions, but speaking from a purely theological view point this should answer your question.

if you would read the story of Jesus' life, that is the new testament, you would see that Jesus said "I require mercy, not sacrifice". I believe the reason for His law and the harsh punishment was because the Jews had just come out of a culture where anything went, i.e. the egyptians worshiped many gods and did other immorral things. so I believe the law was so strict to try and deter them from continuing to do the same old things that God hated. Jesus came to show mercy, why else would He tell sinners "go, your sins are forgiven" ? He could have just condemned them on the spot, but He decided to show them mercy. God still hates sin just as much as He did when He told the Israelites to stone people, the only difference is now God has made forgiveness accessible to everyone through Jesus! Because He died the death that we were supposed to die!

Because we do not live in the dark ages. Man has progressed to higher intelligence. If we lived according to the Bible now, we would have made no progress to modern living. Some countries still stone adulterers and some still have slaves. The western world has progressed to applying other methods of non christian values such as; hate, corruption, greed and doing a very good job of killing people in wars.

oh but we are...but the stones are now guns....knives...missiles...hammers...and anything else man can lay his hands on...as for slaves, one only has to look to the well to do people, the so called aristocracy...the servants they have COULD be called slaves, but they get a wage,so maybe that's not correct...multiple wives are for people who have differing beliefs to that of ours.....each to his own...no one man has the right to say that his way is the right way...only God has....and God made man with the free will to choose which path he wants to take...we all know deep down within our souls, what is right and wrong....we all know how we feel, if we have done something that another person would question..or if we have said bad things, and watched the hurt flicker in the eyes of the person we addressed it to.....some of Gods 'rules' are hard to live by....but we all do our best,I am sure of it....God is known by many names by many religions, but when we look skywards, I think and like to feel, we are looking at the same person.

Since Christianity is not a civil law like the law of Moses was for Israel, we are not to carry out their civil punishments. It was never commanded to own slaves or to have multiple wives. There were regulations concerning how to treat them, but no command to acquire them.

you don't see the Bible telling people to own slaves or have several wives, it merely describes those events
as for Old Testament "stoning" etc, these were laws governing ancient Israel

What did Jesus do? He forgave the woman who was about to be stoned for adultery and said to her, go and sin no more. When He came, He was the fulfillment of all the law. He brought to us a new way of living; mercy, grace, forgiveness, compassion, kindness, love. The law was a schoolmaster, the bible says, to bring us to Christ. The law was to show us that we are unable to keep the law. That is why we have Jesus. In Him is the fulfillment of all of it. We are just to believe in Him. To "do justly, and to love mercy".
