How can I ensure that if they pay by check it is good? Or how can I protect myself from a fraud transaction? Should I not hand over title to car until check clears?

If i were you I'd suggest cash or a cashiers check from their bank......NEVER EVER accept a personal check from a stranger when selling something UNLESS you hold what they purchased and if possible go to their bank and cash the check if the check is from out of town 30-40-miles then deposit it when it clears you'll then go ahead with signing over all rights to the buyer.. Good luck
