I currently work for the SPCA and you would be slapped with animal cruelty if you are caught. The cat would more than likely die. Do the little one a favor and take it to the SPCA.

In my town, you can leave notices like "free cat to good home" at the library and in the paper and at the vet's office. Also craigslist.com
Take it to the shelter. Some shelters are no-kill, you can call and ask.
If you leave it in the country, it could get ran over, eaten or mauled by a dog or other animal, etc. It might starve. It would sit hungry in freezing rain/snow and wonder where you are. IF it kills food...it is killing off the local wildlife, which is more animals suffering because of you. It could get rabies from a rabid racoon. Worst case scenario, some nice lady or little kid might get hit by a car while trying to rescue it from the middle of the road. Just take it to the shelter.
And contrary to popular belief, country people do NOT take in every stray animal they see. If your cat gets into the chickens, it might get shot. Just take it to the shelter.

You can't find it a home??? You did that when you decided to have the pet. There are plenty of venues to find your pet a suitable home, obviously it doesn't have one now. This is an animal you have lived with every day, that has depended on you like a child to care for it. I dare you to leave it in the country and look at yourself in the mirror every night before getting under your cozy covers for a good night's rest. I don't think the question is, "Can you get in trouble", I think it's more like, "Can you live with yourself"? Try www.craigslist.com in your state and town under pets. Next time you want something to care for, get a plant, you can throw that out if it doesn't work out, but you don't throw away other beings that depend on you.

if i was the president i would make it illegal!
if ur leaving the country, leave the cat in the humaine society center.
Dont get mad when ur not respected there... Abandoning a cat. Tisk, Tisk!
Dont just leave the cat to fend for itself. even worse, if the cat is not fixed that would increase the population of stray cats that are taked by viruses, car accidents, and abusse.
I dont know why u would abandon an animal, its like a child!
If ur tlking about leaving it for about a week, with a weeks worth of food, water, and litter, in airconditioning....then thats fine.
But i dought ur going to leave a lifetime supply of food, water, litter, and air conditioniong.
Maybe u can find someone who would take good care of it to keep it if there is no humaine society nearby.

Yes. just pay the fee for putting it in a reputable shelter where someone else, someone who CARES, will give Kitty a nice loving home!
If you abandon an animal in my state, it's considered cruelty and it's a FELONY.

well theres virtually no way they could know who left the cat unless u leave tags on it. but why don't u take it to the humane society instead. it could have trouble taking care of itself in the wild. is it neutered and does it have claws, i hope its yes to both of those answers, if u decide to abandon it in the country.

Probably it's a good solution for unwanted and nasty husbands, wives and lovers, but not good for poor little loveable kitty cats!
