Dish Network has a slight advantage for pricing but will offer slightly less channels in their tiered packaging, this chart displays the differences in channels and pricing. Right now Dish Network has a promotion offering the first three months of service for just $19.99, this includes STARZ movie package. This offer is available from All Sat by calling 1-800-966-7147 promotion code MY12360. Direct TV has a promotion offering their 155 channels of TOTAL CHOICE programming for $29.99 for the first 3 months, this includes HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Starz. This offer is available through Rapid Satellite a division of Ciruit City, call 1-800-315-1722 promotion code: 21430 See chart for full programming pricing. For local channels Dish Network charges an additional $5 a month, Direct TV charges $3 a month.

Sports Programming
Slight Advantage - Direct TV

Both Dish Network and Direct TV offer sports programming packages at an additional cost. If you're an avid NFL fan, and want the Sunday Ticket, your only choice is Direct TV, as Dish Network DOES NOT offer the NFL Sunday Ticket. Dish Network does have the Multi-Sport Package which includes most of the FOX regional channels.

NFL Sunday Ticket NBA League Pass ESPN GamePlan MLB Extra Innings MLS Direct Kick Barclays English Premier League ESPN Full Court Mega March Madness NHL Center Ice Cricket Ticket Multi-Sport Package(includes regional Fox Sports)

DVR Equipment

Slight Advantage - Direct TV

Both Dish Network and Direct TV offer DVR equipment for free when you order their pr, the difference is Direct TV uses Tivo for their DVR equipment. With Direct TV's TIVO, you can watch one channel, while recording another. Dish Network's DVR systems do offer more recording hours though.

If you need NFL ticket, Direct TV should be your choice hands down. You should also select Direct TV if you want a nicer interface for the DVR equipment.

If you're on a tight budget, you can save a little each month with Dish Network, as their packages run slightly cheaper per month.

Never had Dish Network so I can't comment on their services.
We had Direct TV for years and were pretty happy with them. The only problem was they didn't offer local channels for our area, so when Cable came around offering to install outlets in any rooms for free and gave us a good deal we switched.
I think they're all pretty close, just look at the specials they're offering at the time you want to sign up and pick the one with the best deal.
