In theory, all dogs toenails should grow at about the same rate. However, some dogs do a more effective job at wearing their nails down during everyday activities. A short-limbed dog like a Basset Hound would, naturally, have a more difficult time with wearing nails down. There can also be a dietary influence on the rate at which our dogs' nails grow - for example, a high protein diet could cause nails to grow longer and stronger than a dog who eats lower quality food.

Ideally, our dogs nails should be short enough that, when the foot is flat on the ground, the nails do not touch (it's much easier to see if your dog is standing on tile). If their nails are too long, it can be painful on their feet and cause them to alter their posture, causing problems in places other than their little toes.

You can only trim nails back to the blood supply (referred to as the "quik"), so it can be a long process to get them to an acceptable length. It can be a lot of work, but your dog will be most appreciative of all your effort!

They wwere bred that way for hunting rabbits, they will dig into burrows and pull the rabbits out for the hunters, so they need nails.
Long ears and droopy eyes need cleaning. Nails need trimming. The long ears of a Basset do not allow good circulation of air and are prone to infection. Owners should clean their dog’s ears once a week. The Basset’s droopy eyes should also be kept clean of debris and nails trimmed once or twice monthly

they need exercise that naturally files them down like maybe a brisk walk once a day on a sidewalk.
