Top 3 birds are:
African Grey's are the number one talker, up to 1000 words
Macaws are 2nd with like up to 750 words
Cockatoos 3rd
many of the bigger parrots will work up a vocab. but will only repeat phrases it hears.
smaller birds like Parakeets and Cockatiels will learn a couple of phrases but mostly will pick up sounds, i.e. "the wolf call", a telephone ring, microwave, door bell,
I had one cockatiel that did ALL of those!!

And if you want to talk to someone about birds DO NOT GO TO A CORPORATION ANIMAL STORE, most people working there are teenagers that don't have ANY IDEA what they are talking about! Find a bird breeder in your area if you want to talk to someone who knows something!!

Good luck!

I am told that African Grey's are one of the best talkers. But my Sun Conure will talk too. He can only say a few things but he does talk. The larger birds like a Macaw can talk just as good as an african grey too but cost a lot more. The word parrot means it is a lager bird and should be able to talk. But that is only if they want to talk. I have read that the male birds are better talkers and some male or female will never talk.

So depends on the bird.

I have an African Grey named Stuart...he is starting to talk and mimic sounds like crazy. It is said that this breed is the smartest of all parrots and I can see why.

I also have a 4 month old Lesser Sulfer Crested Cockatoo and I can see alot of possibilities in her as well but is much more affectionate then they Grey who adores hubby and noone else. The Cockatoo loves both of us and is happiest being held or just sitting on my head.

Just remember to do all your homework....make sure the cage is large and most importantly....remember that parrots live for at least 60 years so they are for keeps for the rest of your life. Make sure you are ready to handle it.

African Grey parrots are usually considered the best talkers. However Amazon parrots come in a close second.

Lots of birds can develop vocal ability. I've heard the grey parrot is one of the best, but the common crow can do it as well.

african greys yellow wings --most of the larger species of parrots can talk however it is up to the one trying to train them that this talent comes from-------african greays are smart and can pick up little words and sometimes inflections---they can also do tricks and are socialble---so are cockatoos, however you need to spend a lot of time with them or they get really loud and noisey
