Both Christianity and Islam (along with Judaism) form the Abrahamic religions. This is because they all originated from the prophet Anraham. All three have the same prophets eg Moses etc. It is when time reaches Jesus that they all go their seperate ways. Jews stop at this point. Christians have their belief in Jesus. Muslims believe in Jesus, but that the final prophet was Muhammad. ALthough Muslims believe in Jesus their views on the life of Jesus are different. Muslims do not believe that Jesus died on the cross.
The religions therefore are very similar, in my opinion i would have thought it amkes more sense for Christians and Muslims to get on due to some shared beliefs, so now i do not think that they are too similar for their own good.

Interesting approach, while most people would automatically dismiss your statement, I tend to strongly agree with it.
First we need to define the major difference between both religions;
I would have to say it revolves around the status of Jesus. Christians believe Jesus is the son of god, while muslims consider Jesus a messenger/ prophet like Moses, Mohamed, Abraham etc. This fundemental difference is really not worth the arguing since both religions preach one god. There are a few other smaller issues such as alcohol, pork etc but they are not fundemental differences.
In other words the essence of both religions are very very similar. The conflict is more social, since few people from either side are willing to take time to look at the other religion and tell the masses about the truth.
One other problem is that a lot of people nowadays belong to a certain religion by birth and not by belief. This paves the way for a lot of ignorance & hatred. It is just like being white, black, hispanic, asian etc, it is a matter of race which ends up causing discrimination.

Other than they both believe in GOD, they are completely different. Christians believe jesus is either GOD or the son of GOD(I wish they could make up thier mind). While muslims accept him as a prophet and the coming messiah for the jews. Christians believe GOD is the father while muslims believe that GOD is GOD. Christians believe in a holy trinity, while muslims believe GOD is one alone. Christians believe in one heaven, while muslims believe in many heavens(mainly the great seven) but only one paradise of allah. Christians believe GOD was incarnate as jesus, while muslims don't believe GOD was never incarnate. Christians believe they are exempt from the 10 commandments, while muslims know they are the true laws of GOD. Christians recognise the sabbath on sunday, while muslims recognise it on saturday. Christians believe jesus to be all of the above, while muslims recognise him as son of man, the coming messiah and a prophet(one of the mighty seven). These are just some differences. They are far from being similar. PEACE!

Muslims today seem to think they are commanded by their religion and their religious leaders and their religious book and their religious prophet to murder millions of people who seem to be by logical standards pretty good people who are not hurting others.
While on the other hand Christians interpret their religious leaders and their religious book and prophets today as telling them they should love everyone as them selves even their enemies and that to kill humans is wrong.
In history these two belief systems may look somewhat similar to some people, but to me the two religions seem at the core to be very, very, different.
Granted there are many evil people in so called Christian groups, but Christ is the only true Christian and He died for all humans so that they might choose eternal life. Is there any such person in the religion of Islam that is divine and yet has died so that all humans can live eternally? Christ said to love your enemies and do good for them that hate you and to turn the other cheek, etc., etc. It appears to me that Muslims think they are taught to kill anyone who criticises them or their belief or their leaders. Christ allowed His enemies to kill Him and He is the example of how to live for Christians.
This seems like a pretty big difference to me.

oxyman42 Re-Loaded,
It's like this: If you look from a few miles up from the atmosphere, New York and Los Angeles seem very far away from each other. Now focus on the same two points from Pluto. Would they seem so distant from eachother then?
So the more you know, the less it seems. And the more you look, each calls the other condemned by God. That condemning is the difference.

for all the other ignorant comments...I can't believe how stupid some people are. I mean seriously no knowledge in what you're talking yet you blurt out amazing ignorance.
First of all, islam and christianity are similar. #1 because they were both messages sent to Prophets by GOD. therefore the similarity shouldn't be surprising. The differences are what you must question.
for all the idiots..May GOD help you.

Quite the contrary. Christianity and Islam are diametrically opposed.
Islam claims Allah neither begats, nor was begotten.
Christianity believes that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God.
Islam denies Jesus' death on the cross.
Christianity believes that Jesus death on the cross pays for our sins.
Islam says that Jesus is merely a prophet of God, and not even as important as Mohammed.
Christianity says that Jesus is the son of the God who died on a cross, rose again, and is the only way to salvation.
NOTHING in common.

It's the same damn god they believe in.
The god of Abraham.
Some Christians will argue this, because their too arrogant and ignorant, to learn the origin of Christianity, I pity them.
