I just had to answer this question, because my mother fussed at me for years that I was going to give myself arthritis. Then a report came out a couple of years ago that an extensive study had been completed regarding popping knuckles and whether it made you any more likely to get arthritis. The study concluded that popping our knuckles WILL NOT cause arthritis. As a matter of fact, you may notice that many concert pianists will pop their knuckles before playing. It limbers them up. Needless to say, I showed the articles to my mother and had a moment of joy.

According to the book "Why Do Men Have Nipples? Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini" by Mark Leyner & Billy Goldberg, there is no scientific evidence that says cracking your knuckles is unhealthy, nor is there evidence that it causes arthritis. The cracking noise is a build-up of gas that escapes with the pressure of bending. So crack and pop away...it won't hurt you.

Bad, very bad. My husband cracked his knuckles for many years and they are now enlarged and usually sore. His doctor said that his continual cracking did all the damage to his knuckles. They have gotten so big he can't get his wedding band off at all; the ring still fits his finger, but he cannot get it off over the knuckle. So STOP now before you do this damage to yourself.

Cracking you knuckles is bad because it loosens the joints in your fingers, and after a while of doing it,it may cause arthritis. See the noise you hear when you crack your knuckles is air excaping from inside the knucle.

I have a friend who does this often and he actually asked this question to 3 professors in Medical School.
2 professors said that it is benign(not good nor bad)
1 professor said it could cause osteoarthiritis if done excessively.(bad)
