Training a pit bull isn't much different than training most dogs if you're talking about obedience. Some take longer than others but they all pretty much train the same way... simple one word commands preceded by the dog's name. Buy a book and spend that quality time with your dog. Training the dog yourself will make you a better parent!

Pit Bulls are terriers. They are smart dogs and can respond well to obedience training, although they can be stubborn at times. If you keep them indoors with the family and reinforce the training, they can be wonderful pets. If you have no funds to train your dog, how are you feeding him and providing health care? Dogs are living beings, they need nutrition, health care, training and love. The love is free, but the other stuff is costly. Go to your video store, there are good videos on training. Pet Smart offers training and socialization for puppies for a nominal fee.

With a pit bull it is worth borrowing and saving the money to afford the professional. I don't agree that all pit bulls or rottweilers are bad, but bad training and bad owners can lead to violent behavior. A lot of communities have cheaper group training sessions. Maybe check with your local college or police department.

I can train an APBT to do anything I want the dog to do. Obedience, protection or attack, but not for anyone except a select few. I trained Dobermans in the 70`s in all three phases but I will train an APBT in obedience only. Save your money and start inquiring for a trainer that has an excellent reputation and methods.

Train them for what? Hopefully you are talking about obedience training and in that case you train them like any other dog. My Pit was trained just the same way I trained everyone of my other dogs.

Obedience training classes are great - go to www.akc.org, and contact your local kennel club. You can also read books on the subject. I personally recommend "Expert Obedience Training For Dogs" by Winnifred Strickland.

Cinimon Clark. I am acquainted with this woman and she is a pit bull trainer. She does charge but you can read her viewpoints on training pit bulls.

What do you want to train him to do? Dog training doesn't really vary by breed too much, other than the fact that some breeds tend to be smarter than others and thus harder to train (and easier to "ruin"). But it's all still the same psychology...repetition, positive reinforcement, etc...
