Family are the first to know. The name of the wounded will not be released to the public, or published on any list until after the family is notified. In the case of being wounded, I think that a telephone call is sometimes acceptable, but in case of death, they normally send an officer, in person, to the family's house.

Every military member has an "in case of emergency" contact. They are notified first. If you are not that person, you will need to talk to that person who was identified.
