Hope this might answer some of the people on here to the necessity of snipers, and why they are still useful and needed tool in this modern day army. Doing a job hundreds of planes could not do, surgical strikes against the enemy. The excerpt is from a British paper the Sun.

A BRITISH sniper waging war on the Taliban is so deadly he has earned a chilling nickname — The Man Who Never Misses.

The unerring Army sharpshooter has killed 39 rebel fighters single-handedly.

His marksmanship is so lethal that rumours have spread like wildfire through insurgents’ camps, causing panic and confusion.

The sniper — who The Sun is not naming to prevent him becoming a target himself — is a member of elite 3 Para.

Described by sources as “the best shot in the Army” he is responsible for over five per cent of the 700 insurgents killed by Paras since British forces returned to Afghanistan.

A friend of mine, Harold, was a ranger sniper. I think he learned in Australia. But he told me that he would fire a shot and leave quickly, he would not watch the target drop. Every moment for escape from the sniper's nest is priceless. Forget the ego pay-off and get away right after firing the shot.

Sniper school (military) is enormously demanding. You'll need a perfect service record, perfect vision, and be ready for disappointment- there's a very high failure rate in the school.

If you're coming out of high school and thinking about this, talk to a Marine or Army recruiter. They'll get you on a shooting range and let you see what you're made of.

Or find me on Battlefield 2. I play as "roberticvs".

Everybody got most of it right. The thing left out is MINDSET.
You must be able to pull the trigger and never let the thought of killing someone cross your mind. If you can't do that, you won't last a week. You will go stark raving mad.
