Sounds like the man I'm married to. After 8 years of marriage he knows when he's being tuned out , and usually calms down when his attempts at humor end up in a blank stare from me.

Sounds like he is a "switch". Do the same as you would a switch. Turn on when it is dark and turn off when there is light!
