I am a Christian, and I totally am committed to my faith. However, I see Christians on this site answering non religious questions with "the Lord God said..." and other such strong statements. To someone who is not a Christian, that is off putting. I think it comes off snotty, or that you think you are superior. I think a concerned point of view, showing love and compassion, with perhaps a reference to Jesus or God would come across better. What do you think?

Question Man, I am not wishy washy. I just think that sometimes I read people's replies and think, oh boy, why did they have to sound so condescending. It is no way to gather more sheep to the flock.
Thanks for all the lovely answers and opinions.

I think you are absolutely right!!!!
Whether answering a religious question or any other I believe that as a christian we should first of all let our love light shine. Be considerate, kind, and not judgeing people. Try to be a light and help if you can. It's ok to plant a seed, but if you aren't careful you will only cause more harm than good because non-christians don't appreciate being talked to as if they are a nobody. They are and need to be treated like our brothers & sisters. God Bless You.

Agreed. Although to a Christian the God of the Bible is relevent in dealing with all aspects of life, there does not need to be a 'God said statement' in the conversation. Much of the Christian point of view is reason and logic. To me if something about a supposed Christian belief is not logical it probably is not correct.

I think God's word never returns void. I think answering someone from God's word is a gift, because His word is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I think a person who answers questions from that which will never pass away is doing what God would have us do.
It is not in sharing God's word per se that one could be superior or arrogant, but the way in which we do it. His word is living and active, and I will always strive to answer any honest questions about God with His word. What else could I possibly use?

A few days ago I answered a question by someone who asked not to use scripture to back up their statements. I did see several people with all kinds of scripture references. My answer was only based on my experience. People can argue the Bible all day long but NOBODY can argue with my experiences. If we can't give people what they need then we shouldn't be answering their questions. Some people just want to argue. And there is a time when I do answer with scripture when asked not to but it is only for specific reasons when I know they are just looking for a fight and not for truth.

I don't disagree with how you think a Christian can respond to a non-religious question; however, I agree with Christians who respond to non-religious questions with quotes from God's Word. The Word of God is the standard. The Word of God is the reference point for all questions in life--religious or non-religious. To me, it does not matter whether a person relies on the Scriptures or not when I answer one of their questions. The Bible says of Christ, "In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colissians 2:3). Therefore, it is only right that I should seek and refer to His Word regarding all matters in life. Besides, not everyone is "put off" when you refer to what God says about their non-religious matter. I have had some people e-mail me with words of thanks. Many people do not know just how resourceful the Bible is for all matters in life. You might even play a part in leading someone to Christ by referring them to the Word of God for the issue they are dealing with. I always refer to the Scriptures for every matter of life. The Bible is my compass. My opinion does not matter. What Dr. Phil says does not matter. Only God's Truth is what matters. "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do" (2nd Timothy 3:16-17)

I tend to turn the other cheek so to say on people tht do that or just pray for them. I also think that soemtimes the one who is not christian is rude and bashing christians anyway they can, and so the christian who is not perfect by all means steps in with a little self defense as well. Most who do not beleive already have they minds made up so what we say with any scripture etc...wont matter only to bash once again. Just pray for them--

As another christian I don't really think I do that. I have seen it done and agree it is really not conducive to our agenda of spreading the message of love , peace and brotherhood.
While I appreciate more and more our lord and saviors words of wisdom, "many will say to me Lord Lord did we not prophesy in your name? Then I will tell them get away from me you workers of lawlessness. I never knew you."

I think it is how the spirit moves the person answering the question.
And really- most of the questions on here are not from honest seekers-

Jesus spoke with authority. Christians are to be like Jesus.
You're no Christian, you're too worried about offending non-Christians rather than speak the Truth of God's Word.
If you want to follow Jesus, take up your cross and FOLLOW Him, don't be a wishy-washy Christian.
God gave His Holy Spirit to us to empower us.

My favorite quote on this subject is attributed to St. Francis:
"Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary."
