50mm lens is what is normal called a standard lens. This will give you photos that match more or less the view you see with your own eyes.

A lens of 355 would be called a telephoto lens, it will enlarge the view you see. This will bring things closer to the lens but will narror the field of vision.

If you are thinking of buying only one lens then a zoom that goes from around 50mm to between 200mm to 300mm will give you the best of both worlds.

If you are talking about 35mm film cameras, then a 50mm lens would be a 'standard' lens, roughly the same field of view as your eye. A 355mm would be a telephoto lens of about 7X magnification, (355/50 = 7) which would bring the subject about 7 times closer.

50mm lens: There's a speck moving in the distance.

305mm lens: The speck becomes a person. He has blue eyes and a booger hanging out of his nose.
