Most birds are monomorphic, which means they are identical in appearance except for their internal sexual organs.
Some, like Eclectus Parrots are very different, the males being green and the females being red. These are called, "Dimorphic" birds.
Depending on the species of bird you have, you will most likely have to get it DNA Sexed. They take blood, look at the DNA and send you the results.
There are 2 Companies I know of that do this: One is "Zoogen". And the other is "Avian Biotech". I believe it costs about 40 dollars for the Lab test.

What kind of bird do you have?
Most parrots are very hard to tell the difference in sex by color, ecclectus parrots are one exception, the female is red and the male green (or the other way around)
If you have a Budgie (more commonly known as a parakeet) you can tell by the color of the cere (that's the area above the beak that surrounds the nostrils) if it is a male the cere will be blue a female will be light tan, pink or a light purplish color.
A vet can do a blood test to tell you the sex of your bird it isn't very expensive and it is the only really reliable way to tell for most parrot species
Good Luck :o)

It can be next to impossible. You can look up the type of bird on wikipedia and see if there are any guidelines. I know with parakeets you can tell by the color of the cere, which is the thing around their nostrils. Except when you can't, because sometimes they don't have coloring based on sex. Otherwise, if it starts laying eggs, it's female.

Also, if you got it from petsmart, I think they usually only sell males. But I'm not sure.

Call your Vet and ask if he knows a bird breeder (which ever kind of bird you have) and most likely the Vet's office will direct you to an experienced breeder who can help you.
Or look up web-sites of breeders of your type bird and call and talk with them. Most will be friendly and helpful. Some breeds of birds are easier than others to tell the sex at a young age.

Good luck.

Usually with birds, the male is the colorful one. The female has more of a plain color to her.

This depends on what kind of bird you have. Some breeds, like Australian Shell Parakeets, you can tell by the color of the cere, where their nostrils are. But large parrots have to have a blood test. I don't know about other breeds.
