Joe Louis was the greatest champion of all time. Yes, Marciano did beat him but that was after Joe came back out of his retirement. Marciano was undefeated and he was a great boxer or he wouldn't have been 49-0. I'm not saying Rocky is in the top 3, but he was a great fighter. You can't take that away from him.

Rocky Marciano started his pro boxing career at age 25. He was managed by Al Weill, who was a veteran manager. Weill new a lot of "guys with gray suits, if you know what I mean".Weill made a lot of money with his fighters.Weill used his fighters as chess pawns, after a while he got rid of them after they didn't make money for him.Marciano fought hand picked fighters who were over their "time" when he won the title. After 4 years Marciano retired and gave up boxing for his family. He was a hard puncher and a slugger, 49-0 , undefeated fighter, good fighter, not great

to be the best u have to beat the best....who else was a great fighter of his day to make him look like the best? However i think his will to win would carry him to an elite status in any era of boxing. He could give and take a punch better than most fighters.

this is a timeless argument that will wage back and forth forever. yes he was undefeated, yes he had heart, guts, and immense determination, yes he refused to lose....but was he great? to achieve greatness, one must triumph over adversity, meaning a superior foe. w/ali there was no question bec he did triumph over great foes and had myriad singular moments...fighting 13 rounds w/a broken jaw aganst a tough journeyman like norton; knocking out the most feared boxer of his day(foreman - in his prime); etc. rocky fought an over the hill louis, attempting a comeback and fighting for money, not glory. he fought one of the oldest fighers(walcott) and had his hands full, he fought a wily, aging lt heavyweight archie moore and, i believe he got knocked down twice. he beat ezzard charles one of the unsung and misunderstood fighters of his or any other time. after that, what other names did he beat? his competition was good, not great and he barely got past them, so how could he be considered great himself?! not to say he wasn't, per se, it's just that "the jury" will always be out on him. personally i'd rate him the top of the b-level fighters(dempsey, tunney, holyfield, holmes, etc)! really good, but not a fighter who would beat the a-team(ali, louis[in his prime], johnson, tyson) on any given night!

Definatly NOOOOOOOT. not only does he hold 49-0 record but in those days, boxers were made to last, far longer than 10 or 12 rounds. only larry holmes came close with 48, till he lost to michael spinks,. and then spinks was easily ko'd by iron mike.

you gotta do something right to be 49-0, but if you watch the old tapes, you will see that Rocky was a ear-puncher. (he would punch his opponent in the ear while they were down, or going down). this is the kind of dirty tactics that you need to be 49-0
