Dogs usually dig because they are bored and need more exercise. Get the dog some toys to play with and take it for a long walk every morning and evening. However, if your dog is a Dachshund there is not much you can do because they dig out of instinct because they were originally bred as hunters of animals that live in burrows (Rabbits, Ferrets, etc.) and it is their hunting instinct that make them dig. In this case the only thing you can do is keep the dog in a paved or concreted yard.

There are many ways to get your dog to stop digging but it's best to first try to figure out exactly why s/he's digging, see the following site
http://www.gurney.co.uk/pads/archives11.htm
there are many more helpful sites out there, check em out and good luck. BTW, don't punish your dog by hitting it, never, for any reason should you hit a dog or cat.

One of my dogs does the same thing, she's 7 in December. She's usually bored, she'll play quite happily with her sister and then starts digging up the lawn. I've filled the three holes in many times, but she always goes back to the same three spots, makes me wonder whats there that I can't see.
I don't worry about it, since they are rarely left alone. You could try one of those toys that you put treats in, ie a rugby ball or cone. But be careful what you choose to put in it, since we don't want your dog getting over weight. There are times when us dog owners have to leave our dogs alone, none of us like doing it.

Just be very firm with your dog, say 'no' and put it where ever you punish it. but by punish, i mean let it be alone -dogs love and live for attention- and leave it there for 10 to 15 min every time it digs.
my dogs did the same thing a couple yrs ago...have fun.

buy a huge container of red pepper and sprinkle it where they dig, and some around the garden, it should not hurt the plants and will keep your dog out of there.

I found the best solution was to pave over the garden. I have wolfhounds with huge paws and was fighting a losing battle.

Pour ammonia on the area that the dog's getting into. The smell should deter him from digging.
