I have a female pigeon that I aquired as a rescue bird 5 years ago when she was (unfortunately) shot out of the sky as a young bird. She is currently an indoor bird living with another female pigeon. Since she sustained extensive injuries, it is a very traumatic experience for her to lay eggs (She often cannot put any weight on her legs for a few days before and after, and often appears to be in a good amount of pain). Our vet has put her on calcium suppliments to help, and suggested that I do anything I could to prevent her from laying eggs. I have tried leaving the eggs with her, but after a little while they get broken and must be removed. Everytime I touch her eggs, she is very reluctent to return to sitting on them, so I haven't had much luck replacing them with fake eggs. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop or slow her from laying eggs? Or can anyone tell me how to replace her actual eggs with fake ones so that she will accept them as hers? Thanks.

Calcium is being given to her to help replace what she is losing when she lays the eggs, it doesn't encourage the bird to lay more.
removing the eggs and not replacing them may help more than trying to replace them, I had a female cockatiel that would do the same thing and replacing the eggs just seemed to encourage her to lay more when they didn't hatch.
Try decreasing the amount of light she gets each day, you may have to give her supplemental vitamin A with the decrease in sunlight.
Good luck & god bless you for rescuing the bird :o)

If you have a nest box in the cage, take it out. Any sort of "housing" will encourage them to lay eggs. By that I mean a bed, a happy hut tent, or an enclosure of any sort will give them a place to incubate the eggs. By simply removing the place to lay the eggs and incubate them, you will have conquered half the battle.
A have 4 rescued Zebra Finches that began laying eggs. I removed the nest baskets that came with their cage and I haven't had an egg since.

I don't know how to stop her from laying eggs, but, why don't you try putting the fake eggs in with her own eggs, and after she gets used to having them there, remove her own eggs. Or you could try blowing one of her eggs and refilling it with something to give it some weight and use them.

Thevet gave calcium tablets and said to stop the bird laying eggs.

What are egg shells mainly made of ..... calcium.

What the vet is giving is actually encouraging the egg laying.

you have 2 hen birds they can pair up together; they will lay egg's. But the egg's will be infertile; keep the birds away from each other. And give them grit to eat for calcium.
