they dont like having to cram their whiskers against the side of the bowl to get a bite, so they paw it to the middle first.

also, in a case with multiple cats, each one will paw around the bowl to mark its territory. this is also common with litter boxes.

cats have scent glands in their paws and near the whisker area. when they rub one of these two spots on something, they are prolly marking territory.

that's funny. My cat also paws around his bowl but usually after he has eaten from it and there is still some leftover catfood in the bowl. Sometimes, he drags a small rug or discarded clothing to cover the food bowl. Cats are fastidiuos animals and maybe they do this try and cover something smelly?

Mine do that too. I think they like the idea of having a nice full dish. LOL Cats are weird!

It's like they are trying to bury it for future use. The big cats do it all the time when they had enough and want to eat it later.

Our cat "Sascha", does this. I believe this is because of the whiskers. The whiskers are very sensative on a cat. (I have actually asked my wife about marketing a concave bowl for cats).

My Zoe does this after she eats. It's an instinct of them to hide their food. I laugh and tell her "i can see it Zoe"..it's funny..lol
