This girl in my class is very condescending towards me just because I'm not religious.
My Questions: Why is it so hard for people to accept other people's beliefs or lack of beliefs? Why so much animosity? You don't even know the person. Why treat that person like a second class citizen when you haven't gotten the chance to know the real them?

I'm actually a very tolerant person. If you're religious, that's okay. If you're not, that's fine too. Oh, and I've never said anything to that girl. She found out through a friend of hers that I was atheist and since I have her for two classes, she likes to make the day rough on me sometimes.

People fear anything that challenges their own entreched beliefs. They tend to lash out at that or worse yet, try to convince you they are right with circular reasoning and empty platitudes. Count your blessings that she is just rude with you, she could be giving you pamphlets.

Probably because you were too negative to her beliefs, as well. Just because you're not religious it does not mean that other people are indeed religious. I'm just reversing your question. Were you too negative about religion in any way? Try to remember...if this is the case you have the answer to your question. If not, think that there are other factors that could influence her opinion...perhaps her family? Why don't you try to show her your best self? Why don't you ask her about her God? Try to understand her point of view better and if your interest is genuine she might want to get closer to you and appreciate you more as a person

This is understandable. From what I've heard, many atheists are treated this way. I suggest you try to act independent, intelligent and superior, and if you do a good job of it maybe she'll stop doing that. Remember, often the people who do that are doing it to boost their own ego, especially if they do it along with some friends. If you can act the same way towards her WITHOUT having friends for backup, she might get annoyed that you're no longer satisfying to be condescending towards and find something else to do.

Because people are like pack animals. They tend to stay within a certain tight little groups and will defend, violently if necessary, their "turf". I do not know what else to say other than just do not let her know she bothers you. If she were truly a Christian she would try to talk to you and see why you believe what you believe and if you could not find a safe middle ground somewhere then she would at least be civil, and respectful to you.

Bigotry of any kind is a learned behaviour. Chances are, this is how she has seen her parents treat other "non believers" in her life.
I'm willing to bet she has no idea how offensive her behaviour really is. You could really do her a favor by telling her how she is offending you, especially if you do this in a very eloquent and educated fashion. It could be a real eye-opener for her!

I think you're both too young to understand these things or at least she's not mature enough to understand them. For now it's just the family influence that's talking... It is a known fact that among teenagers' vocabulary TOLERANCE is not common used word!

Because of the way people are raised. They are tought that there is only one right way in life and are not very open minded. I think its mosly the parents fault, dont worry about it, just go on with your life. We all need those people in our life to learn different ways :)

Her parents probably learned her to dislike non religious people or it is just human nature. I dont know, because they are working hard to pray and go to church why you can lie down in bed on a sunday morning.. True..

Yes it is sad that people judge others just because they do not believe what they don't. You should remind her that God loves everyone and he doesn't like it when ANYONE judges someone just because they are different from themselves. She needs to take another look at herself?

It is strange. If she is so 'religious', then why she is being so judgmental? Isn't it like one of the first religious rules "Do not judge others" ? She sounds like a hypocrite to me.
