I'm fourteen and five feet tall, maybe 4' 11.5," but do I need to lose some weight? I just want the perfect figure. I don't play any sports, and never have, because I don't have time what with all the homework I get. It seems like the only thing people care about now is how beautiful someone is and I just want to look and feel perfect. I feel so sad right now, because I just ate some cake. It wasn't very much, but I still feel guilty. When I tell my friends this, they tell me not to worry. They say I'm too young to care so much about it. Should I be as caught up in this health thing as I am right now? I'm not much of a candy person and I do eat fruits and vegetables everyday...so, should I worry? Please give me some advice. I also have a question about sugar...if I eat fruits (which have sugar) and some cake like I did just now, is that too much sugar, or is it okay, because I need to allow some of both in my diet?

First of all, you are perfect the way you are RIGHT NOW.
As far as the sugar, fruit and cake/candy are made up of two different kinds of sugar, which your body digests differently. The sugar from fruit is better than the sugar from cake. Your body needs the kind of sugar from fruit, but does not need the sugar from cake.
If you really think you need to lose weight, then stop eating cake and candy. Your body does not need those types of food. But at your age, you shouldn't restrict your intake of other good foods. Keep eating fruits and vegetables, lean meat, dairy products, and whole grain breads. Also try to find some type of activity that you enjoy doing. That may be walking outside, playing an instrument, drawing/painting...really anything you're interested in.
Remember the most important thing is that you learn to love yourself the way you are right now.

You want to eat to be healthy and then the appearance will follow. A little cake from time to time won't be a problem. I've battled weight my whole life, so I know how it's easy to get hung up on it.
The sugar in fruit is different from the kind of sugar that goes into baked goods. The usual recommendation is to have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. I usually have two pieces of fruit, like a banana and an orange every day. On Sunday night I make five salads to bring to work every day. They have lettuce, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes(usually grape tomatoes), and some chicken or tuna. I also bring a cup of yogurt and a banana or an apple.
Please remember that no one is perfect. Eat healthy, have an occasional treat, and if you don't have time for sports then take a walk every day. There are also some good DVD's you can get if you want to exercise at home.

don't be sad! always remember we have the right to choose how we feel about things and if you are gonna have some cake, well, put it on a plate, sit down, smell it, take a bite and SAVOR it. a lot of people, myself included, when it comes to forbidden foods, we jam them down because we are feeling so guilty the whole time and we end up eating way more that we planned. if you are gonna eat it anyway, ENJOY it! you will end up a whole heck of a lot more satisfied than if you down it and feel guilty the whole time. Gosh, being 14 is so hard, so many messages coming from all over. You are perfect just the way you are -i didnt believe it either when i was your age, but try to be as accepting of your own body as you are of say, your mom, grandma or best friend. they dont need to have a perfect figure for you to love them, and neither do you! try to be good to yourself and treat yourself well in this life. remember-you really do get to choose how you feel. decide to feel FABULOUS! i love you!
