I am a fellow snail raiser myself.
When I was a kid, I found tiny baby snails outside (under rocks and such), fed them, waited until they got a little bigger and then let them go. I found that many of them had different food preferences. You can give them dark leafy greens, rotting bark from outside, and some of them liked fish flakes mixed with water to form a slurry. They like to eat a little of everything. Its important to keep the enviroment moist.
The classroom snail (not a wild snail) in middle school had babies, and the teacher let me take one home as a pet. I found that that one was much easier to take care of, was healthier, and not picky at all about food. Give it some dark greenery and it was gone.
Another thing I never thought about when I was kid.... wild snails are intermediate hosts for a lot of parasites. So, even though they usually pass the parasites on by being eaten by another animal, why take a chance?
If you are a snail lover, like me, then I suggest you find a domesticated snail. It will be healthier for you and the snail, and in the long run....less heartbreak.
Good luck!

This depends upon the snail.

Some snails are aquatic and these have different diets than "land" snails. Most snails found on land will eat some sort of green leaf material. You might start with lettuce, spinach or celery leaves. If you keep it for a long time, you will need to provide a source of calcium for the shell.

It would help if you knew the exact species of snail that your son has. Some can live for an incredibly long time. Check out the first site below for general information:

Well, the type of snail you are speaking of, a common garden snail I assume, eats vegetation, which is why we don't want them in our gardens. They usually do nicely on a bit of lettuce or celery greens or other edible greens.

There are many other kinds of snails with quite different dietary habits, but most of the common ones you are likely to find on land are vegetarians.

My school held a military fair and had a booth that taught us how to survive on just plants found in the wilderness. I learned that many of these plants have all the nutrients we need (including protein). I'm a vegetarian and I'm surviving on just "plants" now, so I doubt that the vegetarian in such a situation would die first. They might even last longer than a person who ate the meat!
