Heinz M is correct. Camcorder means, "camera recorder".

Smit is confused. A video camera does not record but it can work with a seperate video recorder and its main purpose is indeed for video not pictures. The resolution or quality of the video is not determined by whether it is being shot by a camcorder or a video camera but only by the design of the device.

basically these are these are interchangeable terms. but if you really want to get technical, a camcorder records sound and video (CAMera+reCORDER) while a video camera technically should be only able to shoot moving pictures, since it is only a camera and has to use a separate recorder. however most of the time you can use either term.

a video camera is a camera that records video, but only upto a certain resolution and its main purpose is taking pictures rather than video recording. where as a video camcorder has the purpose of shooting great quality video in it instead of taking pictures.
