Heartworm prevention is a prescription, but flea and tick control is just over-the-counter. Be aware that store-bought flea and tick medications (like Hartz, Seargents, and Biospot) can be less effective and even harmful to your dog, especially if he is small. You should get Frontline Plus, Advantage, or Revolution. (Frontline and Advantage are non-prescription, but Revolution is prescription b/c it also has heartworm preventative in it) Basicall, go to a vet and see what they carry and recommend! Most vets will want to test your dog for heartworm disease before prescribing the prevention.

All heartworm preventitive requires a prescription. Advantage and Frontline are now available without a prescription. They can be purchased at feed and pet supply stores.
Be aware that depending on your state, your vet may or may not be required to write you a script so you can get heartworm medication from an online source like Petmeds. Some states let the vet decide if they want to or not. Some states require them to write it if asked. Check with your vet.

Not at all. Your local pet store will have them. You can also order on line if you trust the web site. However, before you give heartworm medication to your animal, please have it checked for heartworms first. Then, if okay, place him on the monthly heartworm medication but please do not stop giving it ever. Always best to get heartworm meds from the vet. Best wishes.

FRONT LINE =NO, HEART WORM = YES B/C YOU NEED TO TEST THE DOG FIRST TO MAKE SURE IT IS HEART WORM NEGATIVE BEFORE THE PREVENTITIVE OR IT CAN KILL HIM IF HE ALREADY HAS IT.
