My cat is about 5 years old. He always pees in his box, but maybe a quarter of the time he takes a dump on the basement carpet, even if his box is clean. For awhile he got into the habit of doing that ALL the time, and I started punishing him severely for it. But like I said, he still screws up like 1/4 of the time. I don't get it.

There's no cover on the box. Usually he doesn't just miss the box, though. He goes on the other side of the room, probably ten feet away.

disinfect the corner where he went that u dont want him to go the smell is stil there even though u cant smell it he can they have stuff like this at pet smart etc , as for him missing the litter box maybe u need to get a bigger litter box even though it may seem big enough to u adn when hes in it cats can be very picky on where they potty etc , so get a bigger box adn put news papper under thge box if u can get one with a cover or a higher rim so that hopefully when he goes it will fall into the litter box , another thing sence he seems to like going in the one corner maybe u might try putting another litter box in the corner where he likes to go , if u notice him going in the corner u dont want him going to pick him up and move him to the litter box if he does it again put him back in in time hell learn hey i need to go there not here

Try getting him a 2nd box for his other business. Some cats prefer it. If it's a long haired cat, it could be getting caught in his fur and then falling out. Punishment won't work.

Don't punish, you'll only make him afraid of the box completely! Lots of cats prefer to do their seperate business in seperate boxes. Just get him a 2nd box for his #2's!

punishing him is the worst thing you can do....he is probably just missing the box, probably getting to close to the edge in his squat. Do try a cover for the box, so he has to get all the way into it and the cover will keep it inside the box.

is his box one w/the cover over it? i had to get my cat one with the top part that attaches on because she would back up too far to the edge and do that too, ALOT! Now she has maybe once in 2 years.

Just what do you mean by, punish severely? Do you scare the **** out of him or what? He's probably a nervous wreck!
