yes, mousse has alcohol in it which dries anything out. gel and hair spray pretty much do the same thing, so i really don't have an idea of what you could switch to. i have dry hair also (and use mousse). to make it more conditioned, on days i don't have anywhere to go, i wash my hair and put a lot of a thick conditioner on it. i then wrap my hair in a towel without rinsing it out. i let my hair dry and at the end of the day, then i rinse it out. i do this once a week and it keeps all the styling products from drying my hair out.

Yes, it can. Overwashing your hair, coloring and treatments, and using cheap products can do that as well. Or, you could just have naturally dry hair and/or a dry scalp. The best, and unfortunately more expensive, products are in salons. Ask a stylist which ones in each line are best for your hair condition. I used to use very cheap shampoo and conditioner thinking there wasn't much of a difference, and since I bought one set of my current salon products, I can tell a dramatic difference in my hair's condition after just a couple of weeks.

It can because many of them contain higher amounts of alcohol or alcohol-like agents. I prefer to use moisturizing styling creams and gels, which can also contain some holding agents if that is what you are looking for. Check out the Ojon line and the Dove Advanced care line. Therasilk also has a moisturizing holding gel which is very good.

It is minimal. Nothing a good conditioner won't help. Aveda has a great one phomollient.
