From one of my earlier post:
In religion most practioners fail upon their way. What do they fail to? For the most part, religious practioners are trying to do one thing and that is to address the universe beyond their own egos or ideas of self. Those who do not keep the self in check allow their egos to own their religious/spiritual practice and it merely becomes a part of them which they simply continue to address rather than this grand mystery that we're all experiencing together.
It gets really bad when entire communities of religious practioners allow their egos to own their practice and in this state they begin to distance themselves from those outside their own perspectives. This acts as a springboard to fundamentalism as one inside one of these communities begins to see the outside world as "wrong" and their community as "right" or true or holy etc etc and begin to alienate the outside community. At this point, people can enter into in a state of sociopathic disorder and being that these communities entertain each other's egos they can also enter into self destructive states....
Based on my theory of ego owning the religious/spiritual path, I'd say it's a matter of seeing everything outside their own practice as wrong. When the ego owns the practice, the practice is a part of the self so any attack on the practice (simple statements that the universe is another way that they way they understand it can be viewed as an attack) is an attack on the ego and most egos fight tanaciously to exist as deep down they truly don't.

Please add the word "some" to that. It's important to "some" people of one religion or faith to discredit anothers.
Not for all of us. In my faith, Jesus flat out stated that there were other flocks. He told the Pharisees that the reason they could not believe that He was God's son was because they were not of His flock.
So I let them be. Believe as you wish, perhaps God wants that of you, I don't know and I'm not your judge. All I can do is spread the good news of Jesus, like He told me too. You do as you wish. :)

They feel the need to bolster their own beliefs by disparaging others. They should take note of Buddhists-has anyone ever heard a Buddhist condemn anyone else's belief system-it never happens.

I have been lifting Christ up to all of you since I first got onto Answers. I have pointed out serious error of those that call themselves christians and are not. As for those who will not believe I have answered their slanders against my Lord. This would include atheists, Muslims, and cultist...If you can see the life offered to you in the blood of Christ. Then you can go off your own want and explain your refusal to God Himself.. All I was told to do was to tell you.... Jim

man seeks the truth of life, man can not stand to be wrong. Therefore, if man sees other man believing something different that his own beliefs, he may drought his choices and to avoid that, man will make the attempt to change/punish you for differing views of God/Truth.

It are those who are insecure in their religion/belief that have to discret others. Or - they feel they are right and everyone else is wrong, but saying that or acting on that is unchristian-like. I agree with you.
