Do we also believe in Freud's "projection theory"? Or was Freud just describing his own pathology inversely?

Sort of, but it's probably much more complicated than that. I was having this discussion on here the other day. It is possible that man created gods, and once so much energy was spent by numerous people worshipping them, they then were "willed" into actual existence.
Just a theory, but a plausible one.

The idea of God is not just wish fulfillment. We now know that humans are hard-wired to need a god. With millions of people all affirming the same thing, the god becomes manifest. When the last believer dies off, the god fades away.
