What would you say is the best way of stopping a dog from jumping up on you? This way has and still does work, my own dog doesnt jum up anymore and her senses seem OK.

Better to grab it behind the ear and growl... This is what the mother does when they are pup's. She gives them a sharp nip and growls, they respond well to this and it won't cause them great discomfort. Imagine what the mother does when she carries the puppy around.

Not to my extensive knowledge, a tap on the nose has no effect on the senses just enforces your orders,as long as it is a tap & not too hard it is more of a shock effect with a nasty hollow sound, to them. A good way of quickly stopping a dog jumping up at you or others is: when the dog goes to jump up at you, lift your leg bent at the knee to obstruct it, it shotly relates jumping up as an uncomfortable practice, it helps if you lower yourself/bend down to greet the dog which removes the need to jump up & greet you/get your attention. Hope this helps, Cheers

yes.
not to mention that he will start to flinch and fear any hand that comes near his face, what if one day he responds to this with a bite? the dog will have to be destroyed, and its all the owners fault.
never NEVER hit or even tap ythe dog on the nose. pull him away and say a firm NO!
failing that get an empty squirt bottle fill that with water and squirt it in his face, this will not harm him in anyway what so ever but he will not like the sensation of this sudden "water blast". he will eventually with time and patience, learn to stop.
taping the dog on the nose is just a convenient way for lazy people who cant be bothered to take the time to deal with it properly.

Not that I've ever heard of.
I do the knee trick, I don't actually knee the dog in the chest, simply lift up my knee so the dog rams himself into my knee. I say firmly, 'no! off!' and the second the dog's front feet hit the ground he gets praise and a treat if one's available. Takes time but works for me. The important thing is whatever works. I hate jumping dogs, very ill mannered.

not if its a small tap and only from time to time.... but if you are constantly smacking the dog on the nose this will obviously have bad effects..... if you are talking about training your dog the best thing to do instead of smacking is this.....(only when your dogs a pup) when the dog misbehaves pick him up over your head and shake him a little whilst telling him off.... dogs hate this as they have no control of the situation at all and it shows them that you´re the boss without hurting them.... (obviously dont shake him too roughly just a little bit of movement as your telling him off will do the trick)

No it won't cause their nose to lose some sensitivity, but good for him for telling you off. If you don't know how to properly train a dog you have no business "tapping" someone else's dog!
