You can treat flaking and dryness with over-the-counter dandruff or medicated shampoos. Shampoo the hair vigorously and frequently (preferably daily). Loosen scales with the fingers, scrub for at least 5 minutes, and rinse thoroughly. Active ingredients in these shampoos include salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc, resorcin, ketoconazole, or selenium.

Shampoos or lotions containing selenium, ketoconazole, or corticosteroids may be prescribed for severe cases. To apply shampoos, part the hair into small sections, apply to a small area at a time, and massage into the skin. If on face or chest, apply medicated lotion twice per day.

Seborrheic dermatitis may improve in the summer, especially after outdoor activities.

Treatment Of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

There is no known complete cure for seborrhoeic dermatitis. It can be controlled by using shampoos on the scalp and ointments/creams/gels on the body. You may have to use these medications for a long time till the seborrhoeic dermatitis does not clear. You should therefore avoid more use of steroids for treating seborrhoeic dermatitis.

For scalp, your doctor may prescribe shampoo containing active ingredients such as selenium sulphide, zinc pyrithione, or ketoconazole. You should allow the shampoo to remain on your scalp for about five minutes minimum and then wash it off. Your doctor will tell you about the frequency of use of the shampoo. The frequency depends upon severity of the disease.

For treatment of the patches on the body, your doctor may prescribe steroid creams, or anti-fungal preparations. Sometimes, they may be combined with anti-bacterial agents. Apply the formulations as directed.

There is no known prevention for seborrhoeic dermatitis. Keep your body free of oil, don't get stressed and watch when the weather changes. Washing your scalp regularly with an anti-fungal shampoo once a week may be a good idea. Consult your doctor about treatment and prevention.

If you have psoriasis with seborrhoeic dermatitis, your doctor will follow a different line of treatment.

Food and/or environmental allergies should be ruled out.
Oily type dermatitis can be aggravated by B vitamin deficiencies. Take a B50 complex twice a day til it clears up. (If you get no results in 60 days that is probably not the cause). Mix a couple of B50 capsule contents in a good skin lotion or cream (GNC has a good set of vitamin creams) and apply it to the affected areas. Borage oil and Flaxseed or Fish oil may help. Essential Fatty Acid deficiencies can wreck your skin. Vitamin E and Vitamin C sometimes help.

the best way I have found is:
first using ketaconozole shampoo then immediately afterward following it with a selenium sulfide shampoo (all in one shower. don't use any other shampoo before or afterwards so that the medicine stays on your scalp). the ketoconazole kills it, and the seleneum sulfide keeps it from coming back. my doctor prescribed both and this is the combination i use. use the combination for 2 or 3 days straight, then the selenium sulfide shampoo like every 2 or 3 days thereafter. i have used this for a few years straight, and i never have itching or flakes. i'm not sure about the drug interactions, but it works!
