He doesn't want completely out of the military he only wishes to transfer if it is possible to the reserves so he can be here. We are expecting our first child in May. He loves being in the Navy and is currently stationed in Washington D.C. in the Ceremonial Guard. Is it possible for him to transfer? He is going to talk with the chaplain on base to see if he can help but any suggestions? Thanks.

he must complete his Active Obligation of Service before he can go to the reserves. if he is NCS, he will be shunted into the reserves automatically after his 15 months active duty time is up. If he is not NCS, he has to do his 4,5 or six years first. Depends on his rating and what his contract says. generally speaking, the longer his schooling( A and C school) the longer his AOS is.

he can request regular leave if he wants to be there for the birth. many Commands are very felxible about allowing them to run the chit up the chain and then not having it go into effect until you go into labor.

+ There used to be a program where people could swap duty to a closer location in an emergency. You might check that out. Then he can finish his obligation, then join the reserves. I think the Ceremonial guard might swap with someone on the USS Constitution. Both are Ceremonial outfits. He will have to research it well and get all the answers so that it makes it easy for them to say yes.

Good Luck

He's got rather plum job , he would be a fool to give it up. Sorry the best option is for you to move to him. Thing with the Navy is, once he finishes this tour, he's going back to sea. So ethier awy expect him to be away alot. That is the life of a Navy wife.

I don't think he can transfer to reserves, until after his first active duty tour is finished. At least that is how it is in the Marines.

He will have to finish his current enlistment and then he can join the reserves without interruption of his TOS. Call your local recruiter for accurate information.
