The Catholic Church teaches that everyone who enters heaven is thereby a saint. However, certain individuals who have lived lives of exceptional holiness and service to God are "canonized", which simply means that they are added to the list of "officially recognized" saints. However, canonization does not "make" a person a saint, and there are far more uncanonized saints than canonized ones.
