I plan to chip all of my dogs...but I dont want to end up moving and having to change because the readers wont scan US chips. Also US readers are expensive and whats the point of having your own reader if your dog is lost?

There are many types of chips in the US. only a few are recongized in europe, the most common one is AVID they are used by the US Military Veterinary Clinics to microchip the pets of many military personnel.

I do not know if all foreign scanners are able to read the American chips (or the reverse) because they are on a different frequency. We had a problem a few years ago with this when another local shelter started using ISO chips (which can be read in Canada and Europe), and none of the other area shelters or vets could even detect the dogs were chipped! Unfortunately there is no universal scanner that can read chips on all the different frequencies, which is why a few pet owners who lived abroad had their pets double chipped. I am not promoting the idea, but I think that is why it is important to research what chips are common and can be scanned in the area you could be moving to.

There really is no purpose to having your own reader once your pet has been chipped and registered. Shelters need them to scan stray animals in hopes of reuniting them with their owners (many wonderful success stories there!) and double checking the ID to the registration before implanting one into an animal…but there is no real use for an owner to have one.

you could try to go to the website for them and see what it says. i never even thought to ask the vet about that when we got our dog chipped. and we could be moved over seas at anytime. and by a reader, do you mean the thing that reads the chips? why would you want to get one of those? i wouldn't...too expensive, and doesn't make sense.

i don't understand roughly Mexico yet Canada for one makes use of a distinctive style of chip than they do in the U.S. and purely particular scanners here can examine them. Who microchipped your dogs? i might ask them if the chip is nicely matched with Mexico scanners. additionally verify that your dogs is wearing her tags and in no way tie her outdoors without supervision.
