This has happened to me before to a degree but not often at all. I stayed all night at my boyfriends house last night. He and I have been together for over 4 years. I know him WELL! He has lived in his home that he has now for about 6 months. I have stayed over there a lot and spent the night several times. In other words the surroundings are not new to me. He and I had a argument before we went to bed which actually isn't unusual for us. He said some things that really hurt my feelings. He and I did not make up before we went to bed. I slept on the sofa and woke up in a panic about two hours after I had fell asleep not knowing where I was. I have done this before but almost instantly came to myself and realized where I was. My heart was POUNDING. I actually got up walked in the kitchen, looked around and went back to the den then looked outside thinking OMG where am I? I was having a come apart. Then it hit me where I was! Am I having a come apart. ever done this?? HELP ME!!

First of all....Relax and take a deep breath!

You're fine, having moments like that when you first wake up is completely normal. There could be several reasons why your mind didn't make the connection of where you were when you first woke up and it took a minute to register with your surroundings.

Since you've probably never slept on the couch before, having woken up there instead of somewhere that you're more used to, it's understandable that the surroundings took you off guard. Add to that the fact that you'd have a semi-traumatic (I'm assuming since you went to sleep on the couch you were fairly upset about your argument) expirience before bed which can cause your mind to stress in addition to your body.

So don't worry, it's okay...you're not crazy or abnormal. You were stressed out and tired, your mind can confuse you when you're sleepy!

Next time...hopefully you guys can work things out before bedtime :)

Short-term memory loss is normal during the waking period. There was a similar question to this on Yahoo answers several months ago. An article on "sleep inertia" was cited (see reference). Also look at the wordspy definition "sleep inertia noun. The grogginess and disorientation that a person feels for a few minutes after a sleep or long nap.'" Do a yahoo search on sleep inertia and you will learn more.

YOU ARE NOT BY YOURSELF! This has happened a lot. Especially when you are emotionally upset or where. It can also happen when a dream wakes you abruptly. Even though you are awake and moving part of your body/brain in still in that dream world. When such an emotional toll has been taken on your body you cant expect it work as normal. Emotions do more to our bodies than we know. It can be worse sometimes as a heat stroke to our body mechanics and mental clarity.

Been there, done that - in my own house!

If it becomes a common occurence, then I would go get a check-up, otherwise, it sounded like you had a pretty stressful night whereby your brain was still in gear while you were sleeping.....

Not to worry sweets - now go make up with your boyfriend!
