Converting AVI to MPG is a very slow process because of encoding. No matter what program you use, you can't get around it since all of those program still need to do the encoding (which is the most time consuming part).
Here's the link to site that did a MPEG1 Encoders (quality/speed, etc) comparison (go down to the section that talk about MPEG1 Encoders)
http://www.videohelp.com/comparison.htm
and the winner is TMPGENc and you can see why they choice that program.
You can see how much time it takes to do the encoding. But need to understand only few of them are free and most of them are not (and could be expensive).
More MPEG Encoders reviews and comparison
http://www.geocities.com/ksong1222/mpegenc.htm
http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/reviews/index.html <--- this one nominate two winners: TMPGEnc and CCE Basic.
Remember, QUALITY is the most important thing. Program that can convert from a lot of format to a lot of format doesn't mean the quality of the result will be good.

Don't know what software you are using, but I have been using SUPER. It is a free program (no adware or other junk involved) put out by Erightsoft. seems very stable and reliable. I have converted most of my movies with this program to MPGII format as most newer dvd players will play the format well, an entire movie 1hour 30 min took about 20 to 30 mins. There are also many other formats it can convert to. Like others have said...conversion process is lengthy especially if you don't have a fast processor. You can download free...if you don't like it it has uninstall.
