Words are tricky things. Ask anyone who is bilingual and they will tell you that some words have to be translated in a sort of paraphrase using more than one word. For example, in English we have one word for "snow." The Eskimos have about forty different words for snow. Imagine the confusion that may result. I doubt that desert people have any word for snow. Some languages are closely related. Portuguese and Spanish for example have many words in common. Also the meaning of words changes over time. If you look at a really old dictionary and compare it to a new one you would find some of the meaning are listed differently. They start with the primary or most common meaning and work toward the least commonly used meaning. It won't be long before the dictionaries will have to use "homosexual" as the primary meaning of "gay."

In the Bible, there is a verse where Jesus said (as translated into English) "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven".
However, if you translate it back to the original language, it's not camel, but "rope". Doesn't that change the meaning? A camel could in no way fit through a needle, but a rope might. :)

It only says Mary was a young woman? So let me get this straight - the mighty sign by which we were to recognize the Messiah was that a young woman would have a baby?? That's a sign?? Would be pretty easy to miss, don't you think? Now, if a virgin was with child, that's a sign that might be worth looking for. Which is why when the angel announced to Mary that she was to be the mother of God, she replied "How can this be, for I am a virgin". Remember?

Sure. Here's a fun exercise. Copy a load of text, in English, from any web site. Then go to Google, and find their 'translate' page. Paste your text and translate it into Spanish. Then, copy the Spanish text, paste it into the 'translate' edit field, and translate it back into English. Read and enjoy.

One major point comes to mind.
When they translated the Bible from
the original Aramaic and Hebrew,
they translated the word for young
woman to mean virgin. Hence, Mary
is a virgin. It really said she was a
young woman. She may, or may not
have been married. She may, or may
not have been a virgin. It only said she
was a young woman.

At most it only eclipses certain connotations, but not entire meanings. That is why there are different translations. Some aim for a word to word (KJV) transition and others go for full meaning or significance, which includes paraphrasing (NLT).

Absolutely. It easily happens today with even just simple stuff, like translations of advertisements that are placed in multiple countries, sometimes they get really messed up. I'm sure long ago that could surly happen with translating extensive text.

yes it can. Many times when i read through the Koran.. I'm Arab so i can read it and read the translation.. I'm like what?? that's not what it says.. people are always twisting words and many of the translators are bias in what they believe so they don't always translate literally what it says but what they want it to say.
