If you had the budget.. I know that one is a mid-size, and the other is a compact, and I've test-driven both, but want to hear advice based on experience with the two cars. Thanks,

That's a tough question. The Mazda6 vehicles haven't fared as well as other Mazdas according to Consumer Reports (I had a Mazda3 for 2 years and it ran problem free and Consumer Reports gave it high marks), mainly because more of it is based off Ford vehicles and components.

Also, Honda makes all their safety features standard and it's still very difficult to get ABS and side airbags in a Mazda6 without spending a lot of money (the Mazda6 doesn't even have rear headrests which to me is a major safety and comfort issue).

The Civic is catching up in size to the mid-size cars but is still notably smaller, especially in the cargo area. My question to you is what kind of driving will you be doing (frequent trips with cargo and/or passengers, commuting)?

Better yet look for a 2005 or 2006 Honda Accord with low mileage. The price should be similar unless you're looking at a loaded vehicle.

The Civic is generally regarded as a better car. However it is a smaller car than the Mazda 6. If the size of the Civic meets your needs, you should do very well with it.

Go with the Civic. I've had a 2005 Accord LX for a year and apart from one scheduled oil change, all that I've had to do is put gas in it.

Mazda 6. It is bigger and roomier than the Civic with more quality.

Civic, it's better engineered car.
Mazda is now own by Ford. So not as good as it used to be.
