Actually, putting subs in the wrong box at the wrong tuning frequency can cause sub damage, particularly cone excursion.

The larger the sub, typically the larger the box.

You should really put the subs in the right box as suggested by the manufacturer.

You'll need a bigger cutout obviously, but other than that nothing really, except the "tuning" will be different; there are formulae to figure out exactly what size enclosure will sound best with what size woofer, but I prefer trial and error myself.
It's hard to say exactly how the sound will be affected since there are so many factors. It could be tighter and a little less efficient, it could give you a "peak" in a slightly more annoying place than the peak you would have had with a larger enclosure (by "peak" I mean a frequency that is optimized such that one bass note keeps jumping out at you-- you hear this with about two out of three horrible subs that drive by.)
But be assured there is no harmful effect on the driver.

it wont pump as hard unless its a vented box... and it also wont fit... the big difference is the cubic area inside (each sub has a recomended size) and the size of the opening, you would have to cut it wider to fit...
